We are wrapping up our 2020 riding season and it’s safe to say we are a mixed saddlebag of emotions about it. It has been one HOOF of a summer at Copper Cayuse as we resiliently road on after a very uncertain start to the season due to the global pandemic.

As we rode away from the trailhead, the guide turned back to throw a cheerful bit of advice over her shoulder. “You might as well turn your phones to Airplane Mode now. Save the batteries for the camera.” Searching for a signal would drain them dead since there’s none to be found once you ride up the Birkenhead Forest Service Road, north of Pemberton, and into Copper Cayuse Outfitters’ 4,000-hectare backcountry tenure.

We have started a GoFundMe to support our locally-owned and operated business. Due to the lack of revenue from tours this season, we are in a position where we will be lacking enough funds to feed our horses and have them looked after. Our guided horseback business has been devastated by COVID-19 and although we have been able to make sure our staff is OK, our horses still need to eat and be looked after.

It is not breaking news that spending time outdoors in nature is good for you. Breathing in fresh air, seeing beautiful views, and getting some time away from screens provides instant and undeniable “feel goods”. Beyond an internal feeling, there are many studies, backed by science, that highlight the benefits of getting out into green spaces.

Every riding season we at Copper Cayuse Outfitters (CCO) welcome travelers from all over the world, each from unique and interesting walks of life. We recently caught up with local and visiting guests to share more from their time with CCO and Pemberton, BC.

It's difficult to put into words why this sweet mountain town has such a special place in the hearts of so many; from locals to first-time visitors and everyone in between. That is because it’s charm comes not only from all the things to in Pemberton (of which there are plenty), but also from the people and the picturesque landscape combined.

These 4 handsome chaps are true locals and join us from just down the valley at Mount Currie, where they have been running wild in their herd since birth. Come and say hello!

The sun is low in the sky creating golden, dappled beams through the leaves of the trees that line the trail. After a refreshing drink for the horses at the river, you and your steed continue winding on winding paths under the watchful eye of Mount Currie, on a guided horseback ride of the famous Pemberton Valley trails.

When Friday rolls around, more people than ever are choosing to spend their weekend in the forests, mountains, and lakes near their home. But what exactly is the backcountry? Where is it? And can anybody go there?

Our business is just as much about environmental, cultural and historical stewardship as it is about showing our guests a good time on horseback. In this blog post we answer five of the most popular questions we get asked about how CCO uses the land we operate on.

We built our very own backcountry camping ranch in the mountains near Pemberton, BC. Guests stay for 2 nights and 3 days exploring the coast mountains on horseback, winding from the lush valley bottom to a historic sub-alpine goldmine via singletrack horse and hiking trails and river-crossings.

Spending 3 days riding through the backcountry and camping under the stars is a landmark adventure. No experience or special equipment needed, but here’s a few creature comforts to pack for this amazing experience.
